Brand New Day

Today I’m writing my very first blog post for my new health coaching practice site (heee-eeey!). This month marks the beginning of many things for me… a new career as a holistic health coach, a new social venture that has been cooking for some time now, new hardwood floors in my bedroom, and a new found allergy to cats (major sad face… didn’t say they were all good).

I like beginnings… I mean who doesn’t like beginnings (unless it involves the beginning of a long exam, the start of a cold, or the beginning of an end, but I digress). We’re constantly presented with new beginnings at every moment and for the most part we take them for granted.

Just think - here we are, going about our business, thoughts probably running thru our heads at 100 miles/min and driving ourselves nuts worrying about the little things that usually don’t matter. And yet, every minute, new day, month, year, is a chance for new possibilities and renewal. No second is like the one that just passed - nothing can ever be replicated exactly as it was a moment ago. Let’s think about this for a sec, shall we?

Most of the body’s tissues are under constant renewal. Because of this, it’s believed that the average age of all the cells in an adult’s body may turn out to be as young as 7 to 10 years. It’s been proven that the human body regenerates heart cells, meaning we are literally going thru a constant process of renewal at the cellular level!

So, then, why do we wait til January 1st to make new resolutions? Why do we say “Ok, THIS New Year I’m toootally gonna do what I’ve been saying for the past five… I swear…”. Why do we need a designated date to give ourselves permission to start fresh and anew? Why can’t we do this anytime and all the time, like our cells?

Aha! BUT WE CAN. Each new moment is filled with potentiality - it will be what you make of it. So how do we do that? Well, we can start with a simple step:

Before an action, reaction, thought, decision, etc, take a moment - breathe in and breathe out - and ask yourself…

“what do I desire to feel the most?”

and act on THAT.

Will eating that entire box of oreos make you feel truly satisfied? In the short term.. of course perhaps. But most likely you’ll feel guilt, shame, regret, and probably a little like throwing up afterwards (or you actually do throw up. It’s happened to the best of us, believe me).

Or if you desire to feel connected, then turning down your girlfriends’ invitation to get down on a Friday night and opt to instead veg out on dorritos and Mafia Wives is probably not the best decision. But sometimes it is! It depends on how you truly want to feel.

So instead of waiting all year for a single day to make resolutions in your life, how bout we see each waking moment as a new beginning - filled with endless possibilities and completely open for you to take it by the horns and ride that sucka the way you want.

Just be sure, though, that you’re clear on what it is that you really want ;)
